flagWESTFIELD: Thomas F. Pitoniak Sr., (1924-2014) of Westfield, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, one day shy of his 90th birthday. He was a lifelong resident of Westfield and now joins his beloved wife, Catherine Jean McDonnell Pitoniak, who predeceased him in 2007. Thomas was born to Slovak immigrants Baltazar Pitoniak and Elizabeth Mihlik Pitoniak and raised on a dairy farm in the Mundale section of Westfield. He graduated from Westfield Trade School in 1943 and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviation machinist’s mate, second class, mostly at Barbers Point Naval Base in Hawaii. He and his three brothers, Stephen, Joseph, and John, all served their country during the war. After the war Thomas attended the University of Massachusetts, including at Fort Devens, Mass. He graduated with a degree in animal husbandry and went on to receive training and state certification in health and sanitation. He worked as a plant managerat Liptak’s Pure Dairy in Westfield, as health inspector for the City of Westfield, and as part-time inspector for the Town of Southwick. In 1972 he started his own business conducting soil tests and repairing, designing, and installing septic systems. He was active in that business for the next 25 years. Thomas was also a man of broad interests. He was once named Poet Laureate of the City of Westfield for the many clever poems he would write when municipal figures would retire. The late and legendary Tom O’Neill was one of his closest friends in these many years of municipal service and the two of them together swore countless individuals into service as notaries public, including Thomas’s eldest daughter. Thomas was an expert in Westfield history, including the famed Allyn murder of his long-ago predecessor in the Health Department, and Westfield’s rich theater history. He discussed the local theaters and opera houses on WNNZ Radio, in talks to the Senior Center and area historical societies, and at the Westfield Athenaeum. He and his wife Catherine were devoted fans and benefactors of the Tanglewood Music Center and the Sevenars concert series and loved to attend plays in New York City. In retirement they enjoyed visiting their son Edward and his family in Whistler and Vancouver, British Columbia, staying in Vancouver at their beloved Sylvia Hotel on English Bay, where Thomas would gaze with his binoculars at the ships his granddaughters dubbed “Papa’s Navy,” or take long walks around the seawall of that city’s stunning Stanley Park. Thomas cherished his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed family beach vacations in Old Lyme, Conn., and Martha’s Vineyard. Thomas had the smarts of an engineer and the soul of a poet, with a good deal of humorist thrown in for good measure. It was a family tradition to list one’s three least-favorite things, and into that category Thomas placed onions, garlic, and busy Route 9 in Hadley. The Pitoniak family would like to express their most profound appreciation and thanks to the incredible staff of the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home; their compassion and skill are beyond compare. The Pitoniaks would also like to thank the Arbors in Westfield for the many years of wonderful care they also took of him. Besides Catherine, Thomas was predeceased by his siblings Joseph, Jenny, Annie, and Steve. He leaves his brother John, also of Westfield and the Soldiers’ Home; his sister Dorothy Taudel, of Westfield; his son Edward and wife Kate Barber, of Exeter, R.I.; his daughter Mary Jean, of Pennington, N.J.; his son Thomas Jr. and wife Kathy, of Westfield; his daughter Elizabeth, of Westfield; his daughter Clare Pitoniak-Morse and husband Bob Morse, of Shirley, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and an eagerly awaited great-grandson who will no doubt hear many loving tales of this sweet and multifaceted man.The funeral will be held Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. at Firtion-Adams Funeral Home in Westfield, with Mass at 12 noon at St. Peter & St. Casimir Parish on State Street in Westfield and burial to follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Westfield.Calling hours are Friday, 5 p.m.–8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter & St. Casimir Parish, 22 State St., Westfield, MA 01085, or to the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040.   firtionadams.com

She was the eldest child of Frank and Angelina [Rossi] Germano. She was the devoted wife of Joseph J. McCarthy for 65 years who passed on October 18, 2009. She leaves her son James McCarthy and his wife Jeanne of Feeding, Hills, her son, Daniel McCarthy of Southwick, her daughter, Susan McCarthy and her husband, Bruce Barone of West Springfield, and her daughter in law, Eleanor McCarthy of Feeding Hills.

Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life. Karen McCarthy and her husband Scott Broderick and their daughter Nina, Kate McCarthy Roy and her husband Chris Roy and their children, Lauren and Owen, and Daniel McCarthy and his wife Andrea and their sons, Dovovan, Griffin and Cullen. Her step grandchildren David and Erica Shlosser and their sons, Colin and Gavin, and Danielle and Mike Suprenant and their daughter, Emily.

She leaves many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors from the Tatham section of West Springfield and elsewhere. Special friends are Theresa Fanelli, Angi Parelli, Peggy Sullivan, and her friends from the Kneedlers group at Grace Luthern Church.

While surviving what some might consider a harsh childhood, she emerged as a confident young woman to marry and raise children. Although she was employed most of her life, her priority was her home, husband, and children. Not particularly religious, she had her own brand of charity and friendship that she spread generously. Not formally educated beyond secondary school, she had high emotional intelligence, she was a people person, overlooked their faults, and gave lovingly.

She was an extrovert and loved all the various positions she held at a book bindery, the Springfield Armory during WWII and during the Vietnam War, Burnam’s Dress Shop and Steigers department store. She and her husband owned two cocktail lounges in Springfield. They also owned and bred pacer horses which raced in NE. After retirement, she also worked as a teacher’s aide in the West Springfield school system. She enjoyed the freedom and independence of having her own car and it was a loss when she could no longer drive.

She loved cooking and baking and taking care of her home. She enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family. She read the newspaper every day, including the WSJ and the NYT on weekends. She watched the stock market and kept up on current affairs and had a keen sense of judgment about right and wrong. She absolutely hated Comcast Cable for their poor offerings and high prices. She enjoyed a glass of red wine or brandy with good company.

There will be a funeral service 10 am Tuesday at the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield. A committal service will follow at 11am at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. SOUTHAMPTON – Rosemarie Keller, 87 was born April 2, 1927 in Boston, MA and raised in Westfield, by her mother Gladys Smith and her Pa and Gram and grew up with her aunts and uncles that were nearly her age. After Westfield High School she would ride the bus to A.I.C. but dropped out to marry her “GI Joe” from Southampton, a shell shocked Army Veteran returning from fighting in Italy. She moved to the Keller family farm and soon had two little babies and it became her mission to seek help for her new husband, which she secretly did by contacting the VA for help with his bleeding ears and nightmares. Later when he was at the Holyoke Soldiers Home, while holding hands, she told him what she had done, Joe thanked her and began to cry, she began to cry, her son Louie witnessed their tears and left the room and began to cry. Returning to Joe’s room several minutes later they were still holding hands and talking about life. If Joe began to pick on her she would have her son take her home, always telling him he’d better be in a better mood when she came again to visit. Contacting the VA for help was very meaningful to her, she was very proud that he could lead a good life after the war. Her babies were now young sons, so she went back to A.I.C. to get all of her degrees. She taught at several schools in Western MA before becoming a Math teacher at Holyoke High School She was also the math teacher for S.A.C at Westover A.F.B. for many years and was a volunteer treasurer for the Southampton Council on Aging until recently. She traveled to North, Central and South America, the Caribbean, eastern and western Europe and North Africa. She loved traveling and mowing her lawn with the riding mower which was one of her favorite things to do.She passed away in her living room, just as her husband did, overlooking the Manhan River.
